Firearms training is a key element of our work and our Firearms trainers play an important role in enabling the Constabulary to meet its goals.
Our Firearms Instructors train officers in the use of a wide range of weapons, from guns to less-than-lethal weapons systems and CS incapacitant. They are involved in everything from training new officers who may not have much experience of handling weapons, to keeping qualified Authorised Firearms Officers up to standard. They are also involved in delivering Personal Safety courses, tactical training and specialist courses for marine and road escorts.
We have three bases for our Firearms Instructors – at the Sellafield, Harwell and Dounreay sites. To become an Instructor, you will need to be an experienced, fully trained firearms officer and obtain the national police Firearms Instructor qualification.
Naturally, you will need to be a good communicator, with the ability to convey complex information to a range of audiences clearly and calmly. Of course, you will need solid technical skills, confidence in handling firearms and a good shot, but most of all, you will need to enjoy teaching, motivating and coaching.
